The 2D shapes topic contains all you'll need to teach lessons about sides, corners and the properties and symmetry of a range of two dimensional shapes.

You will want to play this yourself. It’s a quest game. Move through the castle stage by stage by unlocking doors by finding 2d shapes. No not you - the children!

Are you looking for a whole-class quick, smart, 2D shapes quiz for on the activeboard? This is it! This is a colourful, simple presentation of the basics. You lead the quiz, the children give the answers and everyone learns. Great for learning, reinforcing and maintaining 2D shape knowledge. Be the conductor and enjoy the chorus!

This idea could stimulate a lovely piece of art for you to display in the classroom while you are doing your geometry unit. This art piece is teaching circles and squares. Convert the shapes to rectangles and triangles or wherever your imagination takes you. Each child stars!

This is a robotic-sounding memory game. Repeat the sequence of shapes or get the big buzzer!

What a cracker - children will love it. Click on the shape, then click on the name of the shape at the bottom of the screen. Includes all shapes children should know by the end of KS1. Usual favourites plus octagon, pentagon and hexagon.

There's a lot of e-pinboards around, but we like this because of its ease of use and the fact that you can bring rulers and protractors onto it too. Use a photo-capture tool with your whiteboard and you could turn this into a very slick lesson.

Great for properties of shape and lessons on symmetry. Includes rhombus, trapezoid and parallelogram as well as the shapes you would expect of year 2.

Explanations are good for teachers' notes and perhaps some upper KS2.

If you have got some fast finishers who need a bit of extension work, have a look at this game. Its quite involved and requires cutting out, colouring in, some free art to create a scenario for the game to be played in and good cooperative skills practice. This game will keep your KS1 extension group going all week. There is a bit of prep required but I'd recommend it.

Here are six slightly more sophisticated activities for children to use in exploring those fascinating geometrical ideas. From ancient Egyptian rope shapes to other amazing and unusual patterns and designs, use these activities to build your pupils powers of visualisation! Einstein would be impressed!

Good simple PDF to download and print. Very useful assessment activity. The task here is to name fifteen 2D shapes (ellipse, regular pentagon, kite, trapezoid, regular decagon, parallelogram, irregular octagon, equilateral triangle, regular hexagon, isosceles triangle, square, regular heptagon, scalene triangle, trapezium, regular nonagon) with the help of a list of shape names at the bottom of the worksheet. As an extra activity there is also the option to work out the number of lines of symmetry for each shape.

We love the ease of use that this site offers. Creative questioning is the key to getting the most out of it. Can be used to teach perimeter and area as well as symmetry.

We love this simple tangram game. Why not use it as a plenary for a lesson on 2D shape properties. To have a go, each child has to describe the properties of the shape they wish to use.

You know how tangrams work - a great way to encourage children to rearrange shapes in their heads. A good mental maths activity.
